Bromelia umumnya dikenal sebagai tanaman hias daun dkarenakan warna dan corak yang sangat menarik.
Beberapa Bromelia dapat memunculkan bunga dengan bentuk dan bunga yang atraktif.
Nanas,yang buahnya sering dikomsumsi adalah bagian dari jenis tanaman bromelia.
Bromelia tumbuh dengan bentuk daun roset dan umumnya tidak berbatang. Ukuran tanaman bromelia juga sangat beragam, dari yang sangat kecil, yaitu Tillandsia, hingga yang paling besar, yaitu Puya raimondii.
Tinggi tanaman Puya raimondii ini dihabitatnya dapat mencapai hingga 10 meter. Di alam,Bromelia tumbuh pada lingkungan yang variatif,ada yang tumbuh ditanah dan bebatuan namun kebanyakan ditemui tanaman bromelia tumbuh pada pepohonan sebagai tanaman epifit.

Dalam keluarga besar Bromeliaceae para peneliti membaginya dalam Tiga kelompok besar,yaitu :

Bromeliodeae
Pitcairniodeae
Tillandsionideae

Dan dari ketiga kelompok ini terbagi lagi menjadi sekitar 57 jenis,akan tetapi dari 57 jenis ini umum dikenal dan dibudidaya hanya 7 jenis , yaitu :

1. AECHMEA
2. BILLBERGIA
3. CRYPTANTHUS
4. GUZMANIA
5. NEOREGELIA
6. TILLANDSIA
7. VRIESEA
